Vocal Arsene Wenger critic and Dutch fitness
coach Raymond Verheijen has stressed that the
Frenchman must take responsibility for Arsenal’s
current injury crisis.
As the season enters the crucial winter period,
Arsenal are in a good position to launch an assault
on the league title, but an injury crisis is threatening
to derail their campaign, after a good start.
Wenger is missing some of his key personnel from
the squad and his decision not to sign an outfield
player in the summer could come back to haunt him,
as the Arsenal squad look stretched.
The Frenchman has defended his training tactics and
blamed the injury troubles on external affairs, but
Verheijen is not buying into this theory.
The Dutch coach believes it is not a coincidence that
Wenger faces the same injury crisis every season and
feels the Frenchman must take responsibility for his
team’s current predicament.
Verheijen took to Twitter and said: “Arsenal coach
Wenger blaming external factors again: most muscle
injuries happened in wake of international fixtures
“This is a coach who suffered injury crises in 2014,
2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, etc.
Also due to international fixtures?
“As long as Arsenal coach Wenger puts responsibility
outside himself the injury pattern will repeat itself in
2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, etc.
“Football coaches are responsible for planning of
football training so they are responsible for
accumulation of fatigue & subsequent injuries" , he
added.
And he accused Wenger of not understanding how to
properly train his Arsenal squad.
"Football coaches who don't understand principles of
periodisation plan the wrong exercises on the wrong
day causing accumulation of fatigue.
"If player develops extreme fatigue in consecutive
sessions he won't be able to recover between
sessions. Injury risk increases dramatically.
"Doctors & physio's are not responsible for planning
of football training. So, they do not cause injuries.
They can only try to cure injuries.
"Football coaches are responsible for the planning
football training but they do not have enough
knowledge about fitness principles while fitness
coaches know about general fitness principles but
they do not know enough about (the planning of)
football training.
"The solution is to educate football coaches about the
principles of periodisation rather than educating
fitness coaches about football."
Wenger will be hoping that he will have some of his
players back by the time Arsenal are preparing for
their trip to the Midlands to take on West Brom on
21st November.
